This year’s holiday card…
In 1975, the Chinese Chamber crowned Peggy Sen as the 26th Narcissus Queen. Knowing Peggy through her sorority at the University of Hawaii, she asked me to photograph her cover photo. This is my first cover photo for the Narcissus Queen Pageant.
My colleague was asked to photograph the 1976 cover. The following year – 1977 – I received a phone call from the program book editor (Toy Len Chang). She asked if I could photograph the cover that year. Since I knew the 29th Queen – Debbie Chun – we had already made arrangements for me to photograph her cover. This is Debbie’s cover.
On a lark, I asked the editor if I could photograph the contestants. She said okay. Thus began a 40 year association with the Narcissus Queen Pageant and the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii. This is the first group of contestants that I photographed that year – the 29th Narcissus Queen Contestants.
Now it’s 2017 40 years later and here are the 68th Narcissus Queen Contestants. Oh, the stories I could tell you.
Now we’re ready to welcome you back as our reigning Miss Hawaii! Hope to see you soon!
I’m decently proficient in Photoshop but there are limits. Had a family portrait of 125+. Weather decided to bring in a tropical storm on the day we had scheduled the shoot (IOW, it was raining). We’re getting wet, my equipment is getting wet but client decided to go through with the shoot. Because of the circumstances, there were some issues. This is the original image.
After moving some people around, replacing heads of those who blinked, taking out distracting elements, cleaning up the grass in the front and enhancing the sky, this is the final product.
Could I have done more? Maybe but the weather made it a challenging assignment.
Sometimes additional makeup is needed, other times a qualified makeup artist (MUA) does such a good job that no enhancement is needed. In the last year, a new application has made is possible to enhance one’s makeup to get the best possible look for your portraits. Here are some samples.
The first time around, someone forgot to tell someone to make sure the hair was brushed out. This time the hairdresser came with Miss Hawaii and did his thing. Miss Hawaii arrived with her hair in curlers but these are results for the redone session.
The 2017 Pageant season has started. First up – the Miss Chinatown Hawaii/Miss Hawaii Chinese Pageant. Pageant is on Saturday, September 3, 2016 at the Historic Hawaii Theatre.
Finally had the opportunity to photograph Allison Chu, Miss Hawaii 2016
With most of the images I post, it seems I only photograph attractive females. Nope, I do my share of guys too including a fair amount of graduation portraits. For information, download the grad price list in the pricing section.
